TRBNGR 12/01/05
Since spring this year Norway’s (in)famous death punks Turbonegro have been touring Europe (with a handful of American shows thrown in) extensively, promoting their latest release ‘Party Animals’ (Burning Heart / Epitaph) in full force. With no more than a single date in The Netherlands (which in my opinion was one of the best concerts of 2005 - read TRBNGR 05/10/05), I wouldn’t be seeing my favorite apocalypse dudes until next year. However, refusing to take no for an answer, I decided that if they won’t come to me, I’ll come to them. After all, Antwerp is a mere three hours away. Upon arrival our small group of rock & rollers is greeted by the Belgian and Dutch Turbojugends* at the only pizza place (where we met in true Pamparius tradition) in town crazy enough to host a legion of denim-wearing punks and even let them play their own music! (Many thanks to Manic of TJ Antwerp for the organization!) Fifty pizzas, many liters of beer, a TRBNGR sing-a-long, some group photos, an obnoxious tram-ride, and many strange looks from passers-by later, I find myself at Hof ter Lo, where at least eighty percent of the crowd is proudly sporting the familiar TJ jacket. At ten the crowd is getting restless. There is no support act for the show, but if there had been Turbonegro would have undoubtedly blown them off the stage. When six figures emerge from the darkness, they are cheered on by the masses like warriors having returned from a battlefield. It's the first time in eight years Turbonegro play in Belgium, and new songs like "Blow Me (Like The Wind)", "All My Friends Are Dead" and "City of Satan" are well-liked by the crowd, but do not compare to classics such as "I Got Erection", "Get It On", or "Good Head". Although a tight and entertaining performance, the show lacked some of the energy that had been so exciting the last time, but this is by no means uncommon on the last day of tour. Unfortunately "Prince of the Rodeo" was not included in this set, and have Turbonegro gone broke? I missed the zillion dollar bills... When I find my way backstage, Turbonegro no longer wear costumes or make-up. Tom happily (get it?) gives me a hug and introduces his father who apparently met my grandfather some ten years ago on a train in Denmark. (I promise I didn't make that up!) I talk to Chris for some time and give him the chocolate letters (that spell out T-R-B-N-G-R. Clever, no?) I'd brought them. We walk into one of the dressing rooms where Hank is engaged in conversation Tony ("Hey Clio, what do you think of my new father-in-law?") and talk about everything from racist Dutch holidays to naked girls on the internet while drinking champagne. When telling Tom about my study, we discuss the possibility of me going on tour with them as a stylist in my final year (summer - winter 2007). This basically translates into "buying lots of make-up in different cities and washing our dirty clothes", he tells me. (I happen to be very talented at both.) Chris is convinced I will be "scarred for life", and Hank says they'll have to "walk around me in a circle all day to protect me", but I couldn't wish for a better work placement. After saying our goodbyes, we get ourselves to the hotel and I think about buying pink lipstick and washing sailor outfits and denim jackets. * Part of Turbonegro's intrigue is their so-called 'Turbojugend', a fanclub with currently a total of 1576(!) chapters worldwide. Members can be easily recognized by their identical denim jackets, embroidered with the Turbonegro logo, and the 'warrior name' and city of choice (yours truly a.k.a. Clio Slug of TJ Amsterdam). This is especially convenient when forgetting someone's name after getting completely trashed after, of course, a Turbonegro show. Talk about clever marketing. | | Tuesday, October 4th, 2005 | | 12:34 am |
THE HELLACOPTERS, COLOGNE10/01/05
When the website of The Hellacopters read "ROCK & ROLL IS DEAD" earlier this year, it caused quite a bit of commotion in the land of rock, and rumors of one of (if not THE) Sweden's favorite Rock & Roll band breaking up were buzzing everywhere. They were involved with other projects, but calling it quits after more than ten glorious years?! I woudn't hear any of it and dismissed the subject whenever it was brought up in a conversation, afraid that evil tongues might be telling the truth... Thankfully, it soon became clear that The 'Copters were not only staying together, but that 'Rock & Roll is Dead' was the name of their newest record! Since The Hellacopters haven't played anywhere near Amsterdam since April 2003 (at Doornroosje, Nijmegen) and this year's European tour is no exception, we (being my father, his girlfriend, and yours truly) made a road trip to the nearest show. Five hours, four trains, countless phone calls and text messages ("Where the fuck are you?!"), and about ten thousand drunk German soccer supporters later, we arrived in Cologne, Germany where Paul (Fuckin') Smith awaited us. Soon after, we met our friends from the Turbojugend at the Live Music Hall, and within minutes The Hellacopters entered the stage to open the show with one of my favorite songs, '(Gotta Get Some Action) NOW!' While most of the set's songs are new, Hellacopters classics such as 'Toys and Flavors', 'No Song Unheard', and 'It's Good But it Just Ain't Right' aren't forgotten. The center of attention is without a doubt frontman Nicke Andersson, guitar player and vocalist (but also a talented drummer, bass player, songwriter, and artist). Without the slightest bit of effort, he'll make you want to look like him, play guitar like him, sing like him, dress like him, and even walk like him. Impressed, I watch Nicke and the golden-haired "Strings" play their guitars like Rock & Roll gods, while Kenny ethereally plays his beat up Fender bass. Boba's keyboards and the impeccable drums of Robert complete the typical Hellacopters sound. I'm in love, mesmerized by every note and I completely forget about the trip from hell. After an incredible live set, the 'Copters return to play the 1969 MC5 classic 'Kick Out the Jams', 'Rock & Roll is Dead (and We Don't Care)', and 'Hopeless Case of a Kid in Denial'. When the show is over, fans are immediately kicked out and the venue is transformed into a disco. We find refuge in the dressing room, where we are happily greeted by the Swedes. Nicke tells us that earlier, security wouldn't let him in the backstage area because he'd forgotten his pass. Ironically, this situation is also the subject of their latest single, 'I'm in the Band'. "Spinal Tap!", he laughs. As we're hanging out with the 'Copters, bottles of liquor quickly empty and time goes by much too fast. Kenny (who insists he'd met my father's girlfriend before, which he actually hadn't) tells me that the beaded necklace he's wearing is for good karma and wards off evil spirits, and puts the jewelry around my neck before leaving. "Take good care of your father", he smiles. For me, as long as The Hellacopters are around, Rock & Roll is still alive. Set list (in no particular order): (Gotta Get Some Action) NOW! Toys and Flavors No Song Unheard By the Grace of God It's Good but it Just Ain't Right Before the Fall Everything's on TV Murder on My Mind Monekyboy I'm in the Band Time Got No Time to Wait for Me Put Out the Fire Hopeless Case of a Kid in Denial Rock'n'Roll is Dead Kick Out the Jams | | Thursday, September 1st, 2005 | | 2:49 pm |
Update
Since my last entry was about what I HAVE been doing, here's a little update on what I'm GOING to be doing... (I'm not doing much at present, so I'm not writing anything about that.) Tomorrow I'm leaving for a three-day school trip to one of the Dutch islands (no, NOT the Caribbean, I wish). I am sceptical. I wouldn't like to be on a boat with MYSELF for three days, let alone with all the second years of my course. We also have a job interview during this weekend, as for the next six months we will be running the music division of a small entertainment company called Rookie. From what I've heard from the fourth years is that it's fun but quite commercial. This was to be expected, but it's still a good learning experience for a rookie like myself. Also, I'm currently reading Kiss And Sell: The Making Of A Supergroup, written by Kiss's business manager. I think this book, along with On The Road With The Ramones, should be required reading for my class. It looks like my dad's band (The Nitwitz) is going on tour again in November. (Probably just Spain, and maybe some other countries in the area, but definitely not the U.S. Sorry.) I'm not sure if I will be able to go with them this time, since coming semester will eat up an incredible amount of my time. | | Friday, August 19th, 2005 | | 10:30 pm |
American Summer '05
Although I'd booked a flight to New York City months ago, I hadn't really thought of what exactly I was going to do there until I was forced to do so when June turned into July. Starting to panic two days before leaving Amsterdam, I made a map of the East Coast which stated which of my friends would be in what city, the distance between them, how to get where, and when I'd be there. I came up with the following: after staying in New York City with Than the first week, I'd go to Montreal and see some friends play at Warped Tour (even though this year's line-up was arguably so even more embarrassing than the last). However, as I soon realized people and therefore minds do change (especially that of a Gemini), I decided to pay a visit to someone in Rochester, NY instead of wasting half a day in a Greyhound bus to Canada for one show. From Rochester I intended to visit my cousin & her family in Vermont, where lived with for a year in 2003/2004. At the end of my trip I would stop by Boston and visit my friend Ben whom I hadn't seen in nearly two years. Well, as pretty as that all looked on paper and inside of my mind, it was far removed from what I really ended up doing: staying in New York City not one, but three weeks, and as a result of several people whose names will be witheld flaking out on me (you know who you are but I could never be mad at you for long, fuckers), never making it to Montreal, Rochester, or even Vermont! However, I had a wonderful time in New York, and I did go to Massachussets and, unexpectedly, New Jersey. On July 23rd I arrived in New York City. It had been over a year since I last stepped foot on American soil, and as much as I love my home town, I was extremely jaded with Amsterdam. (Contrary to what you may think, drugs and hookers are highly overrated.) The first week was extremely exciting. I stayed with my friend Than, who is probably one of my favorite people by now. About 90% of our conversations is about music. The other 10% would be about sex or vegan food. We also made a sport of going to a different vegan restaurant nearly every night. Can you see why I love this guy? On one of my first nights in the city I went to CBGB's, the only club that would let The Ramones play back in 1974. Even though the place looked shitty as ever and the show wasn't even that great, it was awesome. Modern Life Is War and With Honor were the only two bands (out of five or so) worth mentioning. I never cared about Kill Your Idols or any of the hardcore bands there that took themselves too seriously. A couple more shows I attented at CB's convinced me that considering the line-up of one particular show, they must really be desperate. Band #1: a couple of clueless kids who wish they could call themselves emo, band #2: an all style no substance 18 visions clone, band #3: a terrible rap/rock/synth group (I swear I didn't make that up), band #4: drunks with instruments. Also, why did every single band have to make a point of how terrible it is that CB's will be closing down? Yes, we read in the papers that they can't afford their $40.000 a month rent. If you really care that much, why don't you put your money where your mouth is so you can actually "save CBGB's" by not have them pay you a lousy $100 for playing there, for example. And if stores like Hot Topic and Urban Outfitters are selling CBGB's shirts and every fucking wannabe hipster is wearing one, WHY IS CBGB'S BROKE?! A couple of days later I saw Oneida and Ex Models, who'd already "heard rumors" I'd be there (thank you, Scott). Noted should be the most unusual venue; an old lightship called The Frying Pan, built in 1929 and used until the mid 60s before sinking and being underwater for three years. (As some of you may know, I am terrified of shipwrecks, submarines, anchors, and so on. In other words: this ship scared the hell out of me.) Having been raised and restored, The Frying Pan can now be booked for parties, weddings, and in this case, your favorite and most obscure 'fundustrial noise' bands. I noticed that this was the first Ex Models show out of five I've seen so far where no one walked out on. Does that mean they got better or worse? One night I went to The Knitting Factory to see The Dirtbombs from Detroit play. They put on a great show (as always), but one of their two bassplayers broke a string which made a cut in her hand, and had to be rushed to the hospital to get stitches. Even after this unfortunate event, The Dirtbombs proved to be truly rock'n'roll and continued the show without her! After a week and a half of going to shows and parties nearly every night, I moved from the Upper West Side to Brooklyn, where I stayed with Neil, a good friend of my mother's. Not as chaotic as Manhattan, Brooklyn was nice change of scenery from what I'd seen so far. Having stayed there for three weeks, it was really time for me to leave New York City. I said my goodbyes and took a bus to Northampton MA, where Ben and his lovely fiancée Amy picked me up. They took me out to see a movie that turned out to be pretty terrible (The Skeleton Key) and showed me a good time in Boston the next three days before I returned to Amsterdam (but nearly missed my plane). I want to thank everyone who during this trip: let me stay at their place, showed me around, took me out, made me laugh, was happy to see me, got drunk with me, watched a movie with me, went to a show with me, played Scrabble with me, met me at a show, took me to the beach, added me on MySpace after meeting me, thought of me, wished me luck, stayed up all night with me, didn't flake out on me, or just hung out with me. You made everything worth it. Current Mood: tired | | Saturday, July 23rd, 2005 | | 10:04 am |

Sweeeeden!
I got back from a week in Sweden, where I had the best time ever. It's really beautiful there, I met so many awesome people, the weather was great, and I want to move into a little red house in the forest near the lake with Fredrik <3 Last night I went bowling with the Turbojugends over here, and Sam from San Francisco came over which was cool. We were on the girls team which consisted of Lilah Xymox, Angel of Darkness, Sam Vicious and Clio Slug. We ruled. NOT. That hardcore show was amazing, by the way. There's still hope for the Dutch HC scene. Gilgamesh blew me away and of course .Omission. was sweet as ever. I also met someone who also has an ALK3 tattoo and I'm infatuated with. In two weeks I'm leaving for NY, VT, MA and Canada so that's rad. I'd rather go back to Sweden, actually. Long distance blows. <3 | | Thursday, June 23rd, 2005 | | 11:55 pm |
Last night I was in a ridiculously happy mood (I got a new black hoodie which looks way too fucking cute), so I went to see Les Georges Leningrad! They are the most bizarre postpunk/nowave band I've ever seen. Superhero suits, leopard print hotpants, masks, they had it all... Also a very sexy crowd. Aviators at night, AND inside? You are my hero. Other than that I hung out with Australian garage-trash rock’n’roll darlings Digger & The Pussycats, and the lovely Dirtbombs from Detroit. Unfortunately it wasn't an all-nighter that time because I had an exam the next morning (which I failed, FYI.) Next week it's time for hardcore, as I'll be seeing Sex Positions and Chariots (from the U.K., not The Chariot from Georgia). They say they sound like "Orchid raping PageNinetyNine". If you want to know what THAT sounds like... (trust me, you do!) listen to Ghosts for some of that emo violence. Enjoy. | | Friday, June 17th, 2005 | | 8:42 pm |
Happy Birthday to Me
Thanks for all the awesome birthday wishes, it made my day just that little more special! The night before I went to see The Jacket at the 21st Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival (which started out really good but had a lame "happy ending". Adrien Brody is marvelous, though). After that I got trashed (thanks to Long Island Ice Tea, Blue Hawaii, and red wine, respectively) with some friends and congratulated myself at midnight. The next day was even better, the first thing I got when I woke up was this huge fat near 500 page book about Salvador Dalí from my grandfather!! I went to see my mother at the Film Festival (where she worked this week) and hung out with her, and made an appointment at House of Tattoos to get inked next week. That night I went out for dinner (Indian) with my dad & his girlfriend and watched End of the Century and Donnie Darko. A good day, indeed. | | Sunday, June 12th, 2005 | | 10:56 pm |
Update
I have returned from the Caribbean island of Bonaire, or should I just say paradise? The primary reason for my trip there was to be a witness at my favorite uncle's wedding (he wanted to get married on the beach, what a romantic). Since that was only one day, I spent the rest of the week swimming, sunbathing, snorkeling, and doing other important things like watching wild flamingoes. (Few new pictures have been added.) I refused to go diving as I am terrified by the depths of the ocean, but having to prove that I'm not that much of a pussy I went snorkeling by night, which would have been quite an experience had I been able to see without glasses the turtle, porcupine fish, squid, and sea snake everyone else got excited about. Either way, the wedding was hands down the most beautiful I have ever been to. It is said that it's not done to upstage the bride at a wedding. Well, I have yet to meet someone capable of upstaging this bride! I felt somewhat like a white whale next her looking like she could be related to Sophia Loren and Penelope Cruz, wearing a gorgeous hand-made chiffon and lace corset gown. She also happens to be one of the nicest and most caring people I know. As our flight had been delayed for twelve hours, KLM decided to put us (I was travelling with my grandfather, whom I also live with) up in a ridiculously fancy resort for the rest of the day, where I was gawked at by middle-aged balding British business men which was somewhat pathetic. What was really funny I thought, was that even though we had a room payed for by KLM, my grandfather would not let me lie down on on of the two gigantic double beds because he said we were there for the day, not night, and it was disrespectful of me(?!) to do so. I was also not allowed to take the mini soaps and shampoo bottles there, either. (But I did it anyway.) It must be an age thing (he's turning 72 tomorrow) because I thought it was so obnoxious I just laughed and watched BET and Discovery Health Channel instead. When my uncle heard about it he jumped on one of the beds in protest so that even my grandfather had to laugh. The second I step foot into the plane there's rude Dutch people spoiling my good summer mood. The kind that refuse to acknowledge you even when they have to sit next to you for 9 hours straight and you have smiled at them in respect. The kind that pass you your glass of water without looking at you. The kind I don't ever want to become! So back to reality. Tomorrow I have a Contract Negotiation exam, followed by Planning & Control, and (Copyright) Law later this week. What a rude awakening! When I'm done with these subjects (if I pass, may I add) this year is officially OVER. As my birthday is this Wednesday, I have decided to get tattooed to celebrate. I can't tell you what yet, but it's Alkaline Trio related and pictures will be up soon, needless to say. After that I'm off to Sweden for a week, which will be followed by spending time in New York, Vermont, Massachussetts, and perhaps Canada. (Depending if I'm still pissed off at someone by then or not.) Other than that, prayers have been answered... 08/24/05 Alkaline Trio @ Paradiso, Amsterdam Current Mood: tired | | Friday, May 27th, 2005 | | 8:24 pm |
I tried to bake a vegan carrot cake. That was no success. The top was too hard and the rest too mushy. I will try and improve so I can make one for my birthday that will convert all my friends into vegans. I think I want to take a course when I'm done with school. Apparently there's a really good school in NYC for gourmet vegan cooking. That would be pretty awesome, to be a tour manager AND a vegan chef. I went shopping with Sarah today. Bought three pairs of sexy jeans and a jacket. But who needs jeans and a jacket while it's 30 degrees Celsius out?! In seven days I'm on a plane to the Caribbean. (For my uncle's wedding, FYI.) I'm stoked. When I come back I have a couple of exams to do and then go on a roadtrip with Lilah to Graspop in Belgium, and then I'm off to Sweden for a week. On July 23rd I'll fly into NYC and stay there until the 27th/28th (see you Ozzfest, NICK!) and go to Burlington and catch Warped in Toronto (<3!), followed by a week in Vermont and one in Mass. Summer can't come soon enough. Tonight I'm gonna go to De Diepte and see The Sacred Sailors (eh?!) from Sweden. I hope I can still get Sons of Cyrus (also Swedes) a show next month. I saw the Columbian Neckties (Denmark) there last week. Really good show. Seriously rock'n'roll. Current Mood: excited | | Monday, May 23rd, 2005 | | 1:04 am |
TRBNGR 05/18/05
I was sixteen years old when I saw Turbonegro for the first time. With the zillion dollar bills flying around, fake blood all over the place, and fireworks shooting out of Hank's ass(!), it was one of the most memorable shows I have witnessed up to date. Turbonegro had my attention, and wasn't planning on letting it go any time soon. Needless to say, I was beyond excited when the they made it back to Amsterdam this week, with a new record ('Party Animals'), and a new dress code. No more Denim Demons this time, TRBNGR have new identities as a war lord from the deep forests (Hank), a rollerskating gangsta (Chris), a totalitarian guitar hero (Euroboy), a professional best man at weddings (Rune), a disco sailor (Tom) and a human dildo/Michael Hutchence-from-INXS-lookalike-wearing-a-G erman-helmet (Pål)! Two hours before showtime, I enter the dressing room that's occupied by the disco sailor, the rollerskating gangsta, and Tony Slug (that's my dad for you who have been living under a rock for the past 18 years). Tom offers me a glass of wine which will be soon replaced by champagne(!). After having caught up on the past two years with Tom, the war lord (wearing a Jackass T-shirt) shows up with the remaining Apocalypse Dudes. We are immersed in some godawful noise, Peter Pan Speedrock must be starting their set. Who cares. Hank hands me his digital camera and asks me if I'll be his personal photographer for the night. HELL YES! It's time for them to get dressed up and get pretty so I join the denim-wearing masses (Turbojugends EVERYWHERE) upstairs. A huge backdrop displaying a war scene adorns the stage of Paradiso. The six men that looked like mere mortals half an hour ago, now appear as their bizarre gods-like alter-egos. Since I'm supposed to take pictures, I get to stand on the other side of the barrier, so I don't only have a fucking great view, no one's spilling beer on me either. Hank especially, wearing not much more than jeans, a fur cape and black eye make-up, demands full attention from the crowd. Ready as I am to capture this surreal sight, Hank's camera is clearly not: BATTERY EMPTY, the red letters blink at me... Either way, I don't enjoy the show any less because of it, and sing along to songs like "All My Friends Are Dead", "Fuck the World", and "I Got Erection". Turbonegro do not disappoint by any means, but do not quite upstage that first time seeing them either. And apparently they're not out of zillion dollar bills yet! The set is over but the party sure as hell isn't. Returning as Denim Demons, classic songs such as "The Age of Pamparius" (one of my favorites - best song ever written about pizza) and "Prince of the Rodeo" are played. After a second encore, Turbonegro has to finally say goodbye to their minions from the Netherlands. Backstage the Norwegians have transformed back to normal again, but traces of make-up and glitter remain. There's a couple of dozen people around, one more drunk than the other, and the party goes on until about 1:30, when it's time for Turbonegro and their crew to leave for England. Chris says he hates England. He doesn't like Amsterdam, either. Or Denmark. The only place he really likes is Norway. But Sweden is alright, too. The best show they played this tour was in Stockholm. Tonight comes in second place. We say our goodbyes and I think I know what band I want to manage when I grow up... | | Tuesday, May 17th, 2005 | | 11:17 pm |
FINE/TRBNGR
I got a 37,50 (euros, bitches, EUROS) FINE because God forbid I forget my public transport card ONCE. However, tomorrow I'm on the guestlist for TURBONEGRO which outweighs the lameness of ANY fucking fine! Current Mood: irritated | | Sunday, May 15th, 2005 | | 2:21 pm |
Novo & I went to see Since By Man / Hand To Hand / Seven Feet Four on Thursday, and ended up hanging out with Since By Man (who were great live, by the way), but I was so wasted by the time we got to Korsakoff that I missed out on most of the fun. I woke up the next morning STILL DRUNK. I fucking hate that. On Friday I went to Brussels to see Ex Models. The venue was a train station by day. Surprisingly, the sound was quite good for what it was. The crowd was ridiculous. Some guy assumed I liked girls because I couldn't be bothered with him. What an idiot. Someone else wanted his picture taken with me. I'm not sure who he thought I was. During the show several artists were painting the wall behind the band. It turned out pretty nice. The next morning Ex Models left for France, and I just walked around in the city. I love getting 'lost' and not really having to be anywhere. | | Wednesday, May 11th, 2005 | | 8:12 pm |
Last night I had a great dream! I really really wanted a small stingray. It was about as big as the palm of my hand. At the store the owner was sure I'd take very good care of it, so he gave it to me and I didn't have to pay him the 350 euros the little creature was worth. I remember thinking I would get a sweet tattoo with the money I saved. Anyway, this stingray was the most important thing in my life from then on and it needed a new tank to live in. I had not much time to get one, because otherwise it would die without, and it was hard getting it, but eventually I found one that was good enough for him. He was so happy and swam around in it all day. If I had a stingray, I would call it 'Moonfruit'. | | Monday, May 9th, 2005 | | 2:07 pm |
Amsterdam in Ten Days
The past week has been incredibly busy but cultural. Nick came from Vermont to Amsterdam to visit me, which was awesome. We pretended to be real tourists and went on a boat trip through the canals, partied on Queensday, got excited over medieval devices in the Torture museum, were stoned in the park, enjoyed impressionism at the Vincent van Gogh museum, became fascinated with the Egon Schiele exposition, were moved at the Anne Frank house, loved the Rijksmuseum, moshed at Modern Life is War (not me, really), danced at The Bellrays, got drunk with Spencer P. Jones, got lost in Utrecht in search of R.A.M.B.O., demonstrated against Bush, and were late at the airport but this was no catastrophe. As for now... I'm gonna clean up this mess better known as my room that's been neglected for far too long, figure where I can get a show for the Sons of Cyrus, waste time on SuicideGirls.com, procrastinate on homework, and get a train ticket to go to Brussels on Friday to see Ex Models! | | Thursday, April 28th, 2005 | | 9:38 pm |
I refuse to wear orange. Fuck orange.
Does is get any more hectic?! School is unorganized as ever. The number of people living in my house has doubled this week and will increase even more so as Nick should be arriving tomorrow at 6:45am. Awesome, I'm gonna be so attractive that early, he's gonna wonder why he bothered visiting me. I haven't even cleaned up my room yet. What a mess! Dad's doing a show tomorrow in Roelofsarendveen, wherever the hell that is. Apparently everyone is stressing out because it'll be Queensnight and Amsterdam will be a complete madhouse. I am not managing you! Queensday is when my mom will be in Amsterdam for exactly twenty years. Whoa. There's a bunch of hardcore bands at Bitterzoet on Sunday. I am so there. And I thought it couldn't get much weirder than The Blood Brothers. Ex Models proved me wrong, very wrong. Noise, obscure noise! Ian came with me to the show at Paradiso, and she said the music made her stomach turn. (They loved hearing that.) The set, little short of half an hour, amazed me. Some people walked out (which they're used to by now), but what was left was a small audience who got it. Or maybe just tried or pretended to be getting it. (Yours truly.) I ended up taking them to Korsakoff and going to the shows in Groningen and Den Haag.(<3 S.!) Loud, obscure, incredible. When I called the venue in Groningen they wouldn't let me talk to them. As a matter of fact they hung up on me. What the hell. I mean, how many people call pretending to know Ex Models?! Den Haag was very weird. I assume where they played was a squat. Films were projected on the wall behind the band. Lots of arty people. Apparently the building was used for interrogation in the past. I was disappointed that I couldn't see Turbonegro in Germany this weekend, but Ex Models made me forget about Disco Sailors, Deep Forest War Lords, and what not...! We Heart Kiwis
The Hives were wonderful, but that's nothing new. Pelle had a mustache. Why?! I love how arrogant he is on stage, it's so fucking rock'n'roll. The D4 were pretty awesome, too. KIWIS! Lilah & I ended up hanging out with their guitar/drum tech, he was adorable. Unfortunately they had to leave for Paris right away. The Nitwitz played at the afterparty, and it was packed, so we only saw about two songs. That's alright, I think I've seen enough of them in the past month, but I was happy to see my dad again. This is my last weekend of freemdom before classes start again on Monday. I am taking Audo Management (I think they mean AUDIO?) and Professional Products, whatever that means. I flunked my oral exam, that really blows (no pun intended). However, in three months the first year is OVER, and I'm going to be spending time in the East Coast. I got my flight tickets yesterday. Before that I will be in the Caribbean for a week, my uncle is getting married there. Cute, eh? Current Mood: content |
